![]() ![]() She was there when Lula's daddy was torched. He asks her if she knows of a hit being put on them and she assures them there isn't. Sailor was once a driver for these people and sensing that the same folks may be after them now, he detours to Big Tuna, Texas (population: not much) where Perdita Durango (Isabella Rossellini), an ex-girlfriend lives. As revealed gradually through flashbacks, we learn the sordid, intertwined relationships between Lula and her mother and the network of colorful lowlifes that are working in concert to bring our lovers down. Well, Mama Fortune clearly doesn't approve of Sailor, which may explain why she sets in motion a parade of hit men to recover Lula and dispose of Sailor, a task made more difficult since Sailor has decided to break parole and take Lula to California for a change of scenery and a chance to make hot monkey love in different seedy motels along the way. We're just starting and we're definitely not in Kansas anymore! Ripley has been released after two years in jail, where he's picked up by Lula in a classic black convertible with matching slinky black dress and it's off to the motel for a session of their favorite pastime: making hot monkey love while the screen washes into primary colors of glowing light. When threatened by a goon sent by Marietta Fortune (Diane Ladd), his girlfriend Lula's (Laura Dern) mother, he promptly disarms the thug and repeatedly (and graphically) bashes his skull onto the marble floor. We're thrust into the squalor in the opening scene as we meet Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage, with his own hair!) on the steps of a hotel lobby in Cape Fear. ![]()
